High School Baseball’s Biggest Stage: The 97th Koshien Tournament

This event, officially known as the Senbatsu High School Baseball Tournament, gathers 32 of the best high school teams from across the country at the legendary Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture.

Many of Japan’s greatest baseball legends once played under the bright lights of Koshien, making it a stage where dreams are born and history is written.

This year’s tournament kicks off today, March 18, 2025, with the opening ceremony, followed by the much-anticipated first game. Fans across Japan have been eagerly awaiting the moment when teams take the field to begin their battle for the championship. The excitement is palpable, and for many, Koshien is comparable to the Super Bowl in the United States—a national event that brings families, friends, and entire communities together.

The Road to Glory: A Tournament of Tradition

Koshien’s spring edition is particularly special. Unlike its summer counterpart, where teams qualify through regional tournaments, the Senbatsu tournament invites schools based on performance, tradition, and recommendations from the Japan High School Baseball Federation. This selection process adds an extra layer of prestige, as only the best of the best earn the right to compete.

The tournament showcases teams from all 47 prefectures of Japan, with Tokyo and Hokkaido receiving an extra spot each due to their high level of competition. This year, among the first teams to take the field are:
